&hereamoreuntruthfulwordspokeheworldisfullofthingsthatarew,butlynwell.WasitasageasHerbertSpencerwhosaidtotheyoungmanwhohadjustbeatenhimatbilliards,“Moderateskill,sir,isthesignofagoodeyeandasteadyhand,butskillsuchasyuesayouthmisspent?”

Itistruethathehasprovidedeforaumberofpersons,buthehashepluithimselftothetestbywhichwedemaertainershouldjustifyhischoiceofag-thedemonstratiohatthepubliciswillingtopayhimforhise.And,whenhisdayisover,whatisleft,heworld,buttohimself?Nothingbutaisatotten,orisrememberedbystoutgentlemeninclubs.

Theplayiainly,isathingwhiwell.Butthatdoesisnatall,astheproverbwould,byimpli,persuadeus.Thereisnreeableandsalutarythanplayingagamewhielikes,aangitbadlyihepleasureofeeofahemanwhomihewinsissman-whichobservatioheruleitimpliesisseldomobserved,andparativelyfewpeoplereallyplaygamesforthesheereheplaying.Isthisheprevalendpopularityofhandicaps?Whyshouldweexpecttobegivenpoibethatiherthanourownskill?
